Ascites is the accumulation of the fluid in the peritoneal cavity seen in variety of disease states. It is usually a clinical finding confirmed by diagnostic paracentesis, but sub-clinical amount of fluid as little as 100ml may be detected by abdominal sonography1. The various causes of ascites and its pathogenesis are mentioned in Table I. The common causes of ascites in India are chronic liver disease with portal hypertension, congestive cardiac failure, abdominal tuberculosis, malignancy and hypoproteinaemia due to malnutrition.
